Duration: 1–2 days (depending on experience and conditions) Location: Southern Lakes Region, New Zealand Level: Intermediate pilots with solid paragliding experience and ground handling skills Course Overview: The Speed Wing Rating course prepares you to safely and confidently fly speed wings (mini wings) in New Zealand, officially qualifying you under the NZHGPA Speed Flying Manual. This certification is essential for pilots who want to explore the thrilling discipline of speed flying with the right skills, knowledge, and safety awareness. Over 1–2 days, you’ll learn specialised ground handling, flying techniques, and emergency procedures tailored specifically to speed wings—enabling you to enjoy high-speed descents, alpine flying, and hike-and-fly adventures with confidence. What You’ll Learn: Differences between standard paragliders and speed wings Ground handling and launch techniques for small wings Speed control: trimmers use, wing overs, and spirals Aerodynamics and weather considerations specific to speed flying Safety protocols, turbulence management, and emergency responses Equipment setup and maintenance for speed wings Flight planning for alpine and hike-and-fly scenarios Course Structure: - Theory Session: Based on the NZHGPA Speed Flying Manual, covering design, aerodynamics, and safety - Ground Handling: Hands-on practice with launch, control, and quick reactions in various wind conditions - Flight Training: Progressive flights focusing on control, maneuvering, and emergency drills - Debrief: Video analysis and personalized feedback to improve your technique Prerequisites: - Current paragliding pilot license or rating - Solid ground handling and flying experience - Good physical fitness for dynamic flying environments Why Get Rated?
